We are not from New South Wales or Australia, what can we do?It is very easy to be married in Australia your wedding can be organised from your home before your arrival in Australia. All the arrangements can be made by email or telephone. Once you are married you will need to contact the NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages to obtain a marriage certificate. For your marriage to be recognised in your country of residence you may need to have your certificate to be given an Apostille stamp which can be obtained from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

What is a Notice of Intending Marriage (NIM), and when must it be completed?A Notice of Intending Marriage (NIM) must be completed and lodged with the celebrant at least one month before your wedding day. The form expires after 18 months.

Where can I obtain the Notice of Intending Marriage form?I can provide the form to you, or it can be downloaded from the Federal Attorney General’s website at www.ag.gov.au.

What documents do we need to provide for the marriage?You will need to provide the following information for to complete the NIM: proof of date and place of birth: ° a full Australian birth certificate or foreign birth certificate ° an official extract from a birth register ° an Australian or foreign passport proof of identity with a photo, such as a driver licence, passport or official identity card proof that a previous marriage has ended (if applicable) – either a divorce certificate or a full death certificate (if widowed).

What if one of us is under 18 years old?If either of you is under 18, you will need to have the parent/s or guardian/s consent to marry. They must complete the Consent by Both Parents/Consent to Marriage of a Minor form and obtain a Court order authorising the marriage.

What documents are needed if either of us has been married before?If either of you has been married previously, you will need to provide a Decree Absolute of Divorce or a Death Certificate.

Are witnesses required for the marriage ceremony?Yes, you will need two witnesses over 18 years of age.

What if my partner is from overseas and has a prospective spousal visa?If your partner is from overseas and travelling on a prospective spousal visa, I can provide you with a letter for immigration.
